The person of Msgr. Frans Schraven

Frans Schraven was born on the 13th of October 1873 at Lottum, (Limburg, The Netherlands) and grew up in Broekhuizen.

After his education at the Episcopal College in Roermond, philosophy at ‘Rolduc’ in Kerkrade and theology in Paris (with the Lazarists, founded by St.Vincent à Paulo) Frans Schraven was ordained a priest in May 1899 in Paris.

On 26 July 1899 he celebrated his first Holy Mass at Broekhuizenvorst and left on the 5th of August, via Marseille, by boat for China.

On 10 April 1921 he was ordained a Bishop by his cousin, Msgr. Frans Geurts cm, who was also a Bishop in China and he became Apostolic Vicar of the vicariate Chengtingfu, the present city of Zhending.

On 9 October 1937 he was, together with 8 companions, in a horrible way murdered by the Japanese army, because of the refusal to put women refugees at their disposal as ‘comfort girls’.

BIRTH-PLACE HONOURS OWN SON, MURDERED BISHOP IN CHINA.

On 26 June 2016 the Chinese Archbishop, Mgr. Savio Hon (Rom), will visit ‘Rose Village’ Lottum in the Netherlands at the invitation of the Mgr. Schraven Foundation. This in honor of Bishop Frans Schraven, born in Lottum, but cruelly killed by the Japanese army in China on 9 October 1937, along with eight companions, because he refused to offer them female refugees as "comfort women".

Chinese acknowledgement about the Vincentian martyrs of the massacre of Zhengding Church

There was a remarkable openness at the conference which at the end of October took place at the Hebei Normal University in the city of Shijiazhuang in China. Experts called it a breakthrough, now that the past of the church in China was looked at with new eyes.

MSGR. SCHRAVEN FOUNDATION: THE ACTION OF THE JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER ABE SHOCKING FOR CHINESE PEOPLE AND FAMILY OF MSGR. SCHRAVEN AND COMPANIONS.

The Msgr. Schraven Foundation in the Netherlands has seen as shocking the visit of prime minister Abe of Japan to the Yasikuni temple in the heart of Tokio of December 26. In this temple the soldiers who died for their fatherland, among them the soldiers who died during the Second World War in South-East, are commemorated and honoured as heroes. One of them is the Japanese general Tani who was responsible for the murder of Msgr. Schraven and his 8 companions in China.

First phase of the declaration of beatification of Bishop Frans Schraven completed.

Amid great interest from people present as well as the press, bishop Frans Wiertz of Roermond (the Netherlands) sealed the dossier for the declaration of beatification of the in China murdered bishop Frans Schraven and 8 companions. With firm pressure the Episcopal seal was pressed in the hot lacquer while those present held their breath for a moment wondering if it would succeed.
